When we first traveled across the world together, we visited nonprofits in Africa focused on empowering women and children. After this trip, we knew we needed to create a way to permit artisans to reach consumers by geography without any limit. We met with experts in the human rights field and, motivated by our obligation to help others, we combined our backgrounds in fashion, décor, human rights, and development to create our fair trade store. The Little Market has brought together several passions–learning about new handicraft methods empowering women, and finding ways to help preserve them.

I’d really like to know.
Hannah and I founded The Little Market to enable women around the world that are trying to create a brighter future for themselves and their families. We are continuously inspired by every one of our talented and hardworking partners. Every time we travel, we look forward to exploring markets and discovering new goods that showcase heritage and cultural traditions. These excursions are special to us because we have the opportunity learn their stories, to meet with the artisans, and learn about their traditions that make each and every product unique.
Each artisan partner has an inspiring story. The groups include are survivors of domestic violence, are survivors of sex trafficking, have fled violence in their home countries, are mothers, and have experienced poverty.
We are humbled and grateful for our clients our artisan partners, and everyone who has supported this journey. It is because of our efforts that meaningful opportunities are being created for artisans around the world.

I am very excited to say that this week marks four years since my friend Hannah Skvarla and I founded The Little Market, our nonprofit online fair trade store. In October 2013, The Little Market carried products made by eight artisan groups in five countries. Now, The Little Market carries products made by 56 artisans groups in 28 countries.
What is your favorite product to store on The Little Market?

The Little Market carries ethically sourced, artisan-made goods, and each purchase contributes to a sustainable, reliable income for artisans and their families. Many of the social enterprises that we work and the with provide resources including training programs, access to schooling, and family healthcare.
