Seasonally conditions had left the area just like a tinderbox. When winds of around 70 mph hit on the first flames, they spread, well, like wildfire. The blaze incinerated 73,000 acres, burned over 1,500 homes, has prompted the evacuation of 20,000 people and left 11 people dead.
This is the worst, although the vintage 2017 could be tough in many regions of the wine world.
Santa Rosa in Sonoma has been hit hard. The flames have jumped to Napa and Mendocino counties.
